Cilësohet poet kombëtar e njihet edhe si Homeri shqiptar. Gjergj Fishta (23 dhjetor 1871 – 30 dhjetor 1940), ishte frat françeskan, piktor, arkitekt, deputet, anëtar i Akademisë Italiane të Shkencave, kandidati i parë shqiptarë për Çmimin Nobel për Letërsi dhe mbrojtës i kauzës shqiptare në arenën ndërkombëtare. Fishta ka dhënë kontribut të madh edhe në Kongresin e Manastirit, për alfabet e sotëm, ndërsa ka qenë edhe sekretar i përgjithshëm i delegacionit shqiptar në Konferencën e Paqes në Paris. Më poshtë mund të lexoni disa thënie të një prej figurave më të mëdha intelektuale dhe patriotike të historisë kombit shqiptar.

– Edhe atij iu thaftë po goja / që përbuzë këtë gjuhë hyjnore / qi n’gjuhë t’huej, kur s’asht nevoja / flet e tveten e lèn mbas dore…
– Mbi njatë flamur Perendija / me dorë t’ vet Ai e ka shkrue / “Për Shqyptarë do t’jét Shqypnija / kush u a prekë, ai kjoftë mallkue”…
– Po, edhè hâna do t’ a dijë / edhè Dielli do t’ két pá / se për qark ksaj rrokullije / si Shqypnija ‘i vend nuk ká…
– Në rast se ata nuk na duan në një shtet të vetëm, pasi thonë shqyptarët qenkan muslimanë, aherë… na kristianët do t’i shkriejmë kryqet tona dhe do t’i bajmë fishek me mbrojt vllaznitë tanë muslimanë shqyptarë!
– Më dhemb kryet me njato parla-parla të parlamentarëve: dokrra pa kokrra!
