Shkronja ë ka nje rol shumë të veqantë dhe shumë domethënës në gjuhën shqipe.
ë- (pa zë) tregon intonacionin, pra kur në fund të një fjale qëndron shkronja ë, atëherë zanorja që qëndron para ë lexohet gjatë.
P.sh. nje mollë- ketu ë është pazë, mirëpo shkronja o lexohet gjatë (edhe ketu vërej – gjatë, ë është pazë, ndërsa a lexohet gjatë, apo sigurt-këtu u lexohet shumë shkurt, andaj edhe nuk ka në prapashtesë ë)
ë- tregon gjininë femërore, pra nje emer femëror, qoftë emër i veqant apo i pergjithshëm, ne rasën emërore merr prapashtesën ë, si Elirë, Afërditë. Në raste kur nuk je e sigurt se cilës gjini i takon një emër atëherë e bën një test në rasën kallxore, pra me pyetjen- kush?
P.sh. Emri lis – kush? Lisi- nga prapashtesa vëren që është emër mashkullor dhe shënohet pa ë në prapavi, pra vetëm LIS.
ë- tregon shumësin. p.sh. Disa femijë etj. (natyrisht që ka edhe përjashtime)
Kur është fjala për togëfjalësh, atëherë ë largohet nga mesi i togëfjalëshit vetëm atëherë nesë fjala bashkangjitëse fillon me zanore. p.sh. bukëpjekës- këtu ë qëndron, sepse fjala pjekës fillon me bashkëtingëllore. Në të kundërtën anulohet shkronja ë apo zanorja.
